How often do I need dental cleanings?
Generally a patient that hasn’t been to a dentist for a year may need to come in for dental cleanings every 2-3 months. For someone who’s been going to the dentist regularly, we generally schedule every 3-6 months.
What can I expect with a dental cleaning from Kathleen?
During your initial sit down with Kathleen, she will review your chart, your overall health history, and answer any problems or concerns you may have before she starts the cleaning.
Kathleen loves to educate her patients so please feel free to ask her anything before and after your cleaning whether on what areas you’d to improve on, a suggestion or opinion on a dental product or something you’ve read on the internet.
What happens during my cleaning?
During the next 50 minutes of comprehensive cleaning, she’ll explain to you what work is being done, why it’s being done, and why your teeth may be sensitive or why your gums are bleeding. As she’s cleaning your teeth one by one, Kathleen will point out areas in your mouth on what might needs more attention, or where you might have a cavity that needs to be filled by our dentist. Sometimes she’ll hand you a small mirror so you can visually see what she’s working on. She typically does thorough hand scaling instead of using an electric sonic cleaner. She’s very light and gentle to the touch where you might not feel anything. She’ll do a final check to make sure each tooth is smooth before doing a polish and full mouth floss.
How many minutes should it take for a dental cleaning?
We cannot emphasize this enough with our patients to arrive a few minutes early because we’re on a strict schedule to provide a FULL HOUR for each of our patients.
There are too many HMO, PPO plans and large clinics where they’ll allow a total of only 20, 30, 40 minutes of dental cleaning and we feel this is not enough time for the patient.
